Baby Utensil Edition - It's More Complicated Than You Think!

Quick Tip Tuesday: Baby Utensils

Remember the last time you had to choose silverware for yourself? It probably took longer than you'd like to admit, right? Well, guess what? Babies are just as particular when it comes to their utensils!

I learned this firsthand with my own kids. My son had completely different preferences than my daughter did. And just when you think you've found "the one," their feeding habits change as they grow, and suddenly, those go-to spoons are rejected.

So, if you're embarking on the exciting journey of starting solids, don't be afraid to experiment with different styles of baby utensils. What works for one baby might not work for another. Try various shapes, sizes, and materials to see what your little one prefers.

However, there are two things I highly recommend when stocking up on baby spoons and forks:

1. Quantity is Key: Prepare for a lot of utensils ending up on the floor. Seriously. Having a plentiful supply means you're not constantly washing the same two spoons during a meal. It makes life much easier (and less germy!).

2. Quality Teething Material: Look for utensils made from high-quality, food-grade silicone or other safe materials. These can double as excellent teething objects when those little gums are sore. It's a win-win!

3. Cleanability: Ideally the utensils will not have a lot of groves or other areas where food can get stuck and be hard to clean out. You also want to ensure that the utensils are dishwasher safe. The last thing you want after cleaning up the mess from their attempt at feeding is to have to hand wash 10 more spoons!

Incase this seems like a lot of pressure to put on a spoon, remember, babies are going to use their hands just as much as any spoon, if not more! They love eating with their hands and feeling the food and trying to get the food in their mouth.

Navigating the world of baby feeding can feel overwhelming, but remember that every baby is different. Be patient, experiment, and don't be afraid to try new things. And when it comes to utensils, don't underestimate their importance in your little one's feeding journey!
