The Unsung Heroes of Your Home: Why You Need to Clean Your Bins (and How!)
Quick Tip Tuesday: Bins!

Let's talk about something most of us probably avoid thinking about: our trash and recycling bins. They work tirelessly, day in and day out, holding all our discards. But when was the last time you actually cleaned them?
I know, I know. It's not the most glamorous chore on the list. But trust me, giving your bins a good scrub twice a year – ideally in the spring and again in the fall – is a game-changer. Not only does it keep odors at bay, but it also prevents the build-up of grime and potential pests.
Why Twice a Year?
Spring cleaning is the perfect time to wash away the lingering smells and dirt from winter. You're refreshing your home, so why not extend that to your outdoor (or even indoor) waste receptacles? Fall cleaning helps prepare them for the colder months, removing any summer residue and preventing things from getting truly nasty before winter sets in.
How to Tackle the Task:
It's simpler than you think!
Empty Completely: Make sure your bins are totally empty.
Rinse It Out: Use a hose to rinse out any loose debris.
Scrub Down: With a long-handled brush (a toilet brush works great for this!), some warm water, and a good all-purpose cleaner or even just dish soap, give the inside and outside a thorough scrub. Pay extra attention to the bottom and any sticky spots.
Rinse Again: Rinse thoroughly with the hose until all soap and grime are gone.
Let Them Dry: Leave them upside down or tilted to air dry completely to prevent mildew.
One Crucial Tip: Drill a Hole!
Here's a tip that will save you a lot of grief: drill a small hole (or a few!) in the bottom of your outdoor trash and recycling cans. This simple addition ensures that no standing water collects inside. Standing water can lead to:
Lingering Odors: Stagnant water often smells terrible.
Pest Attraction: It can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other unwelcome critters.
Rust and Deterioration: For metal bins, standing water speeds up rust.
A small hole (or holes about ½ an inch will do) lets any rain or rinse water drain right out, keeping your bins drier and fresher between cleanings.
So, next time you're doing your seasonal home refresh, don't forget your bins! A little effort goes a long way in keeping your home (and its surroundings) cleaner and smelling better.
